Spirit of Ukraine concert raises £1,000 for Beyond Conflict

A Fundraising Hero thank you to Alla Sirenko and the Ognisko Polskie centre in Kensington for their beautiful and moving “Spirit of Ukraine” fundraising concert in aid of Beyond Conflict on 28 June 2024, which raised around £1,000.

The Ukrainian Cultural Association President and Founder, Alla Sirenko, who is also an internationally acclaimed composer and concert pianist, led a stunning evening of classical music, opera and poetry in the beautiful environs of the Polish cultural centre, in the heart of South Kensington. Sirenko opened with Fantasy, dedicated to the children of Ukraine and one of her own compositions. Also playing was the  award winning violin soloist, Orpheus Leander, who studied at the Royal Academy of Music and is leader of the Orfeas String Quartet and artistic director of the Spheres Ensemble. He was joined by Nadiia Sychuk, the Ukrainian soprano opera singer who studied at the Odesa National Music Academy. Marcella Riordan, the well known British actress, who has performed in TV and radio dramas as well as theatre across the country, read a selection of poetry, most notably My Ukraine, by Ukraine’s foremost national poet Lina Kostenko.

The event raised money for Beyond Conflict and 50% of the proceeds have been sent to Dream Works, a disabled children’s charity in Lviv, Ukraine, which will provide mental health support for children under its care.
