Palestinian West Bank Project: Report

Beyond Conflict is proud to present a report on the Palestinian West Bank project from our partner on the ground Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP).

The project ran from January 2024 to May 2024, funded by our donor the London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG) Foundation. The work was commissioned in response to the escalated Israeli military response against Palestinian territories  and civilians, following the October 2023 Hamas attack on Israel. This project, provided via our partner MAP, has delivered much needed mental health support to both civilians and frontline workers in the West Bank.

Beyond Conflict Co-Founder and Director said:

“We are grateful to MAP for carrying out this urgent and important work, helping vulnerable Palestinians whose lives have been shattered by recent events.  MHPSS is particularly vital for children and young people because of the long term and inter-generational impact of war trauma. Young people are the future. Providing this kind of support is an investment in future peace and stability in the region. We thank LSEG for supporting this work.”

One mother in the Balata refugee camp in Nablus, said:

“My psychological state improved and I felt that I was not alone in life. I felt I was with a supportive group. I learned breathing techniques that I used many times when I felt angry, stressed and anxious.”

Here are the project highlights below. You can read the full report by clicking here. If you wish to donate you can do so here.

Project Highlights

  • Extended capacity building for psychological First Aid (PFA) in the West Bank in two refugee camps. Four PFA-awareness training sessions were delivered in the Askar and Balata refugee camps.  The sessions advised on how to deal with loss, depression, trauma and how to access support via remote tele-counselling and self-care procedures.

  • Reached 81 caregivers (mothers, fathers, grandparents, teachers and healthcare providers) who took part in MHPSS awareness training. These sessions focused on giving PFA to children, teens and other vulnerable family members.

  • 250 MHPSS care kits were distributed in the refugee camps. These kits aimed to support children in particular, helping to create child-appropriate environments for mental health support through play and creativity.

  • Protection and safeguarding training against gender based violence and sexual exploitation and abuse were integrated throughout the project activities.
